5 most overrated fighters, past 25 years?

Who do you think have been the most overrated fighters the past 25 years an why? 1 being the most overrated.

1. Marvin Hagler- Solid chin and willingness to fight. He was however outboxed by Ray Leonard who fought at a 147lbs and moved up weight after a lay off. His biggest win against Tommy Hearns was because Hearns used the wrong game plane. Strong and sturdy but in terms of boxing skill, very overrated.

2. Ricky Hatton – He was seen as genuine p4p best when he had only beaten one genuinely World class opponent in Kosta Tszyu. In Britain the hype was much more than whats warranted .

3. Oscar De La Hoya -He deserves credit for taking the fights, but he lost all of his big fights. His recognition is more to do with olympic gold and good looks.

4. Joe Calzaghe- Fought so many tomato cans ive lost count. Refused to leave the UK and fight the best and got way too much credit for beating a one dimensional Jeff Lacy who would later get exposed.

5. Evander Holyfield- Other than Mike Tyson who he used very rough-house tactics, every other big name he has faced he’s either drew to or lost.
YB1H8R: You must really have a thing against british boxers.
OneDrop: You clearly are a moron.

No mate Joe Calzaghe was and is one of the best fighters of all time. World Champion for over a decade and undefeated in 46 professional contests!! You say he didn’t fight the big names? So who are Bernard Hopkins, Roy Jones Jr, Mikkel Kessler, Chris Eubank then? Chumps? He fought and he conquered, I won’t hear any bad press about Britains only undefeated champion, he was a superb fighter and only two fighters in history have had more defenses of a world title. Joe Calzaghe was underrated not overrated

    Great Question bro,

But I’m sorry for saying this, but anyone who says Evander Holyfield and Marvin Hagler are overrated doesn’t really know anything about those two. Hagler beat Hearns, Duran, Mugabi, Hamsho, Roldan & Antuofermo. There is nothing overrated about that. He has great power, great chin, great work ethic and was one of (if not the) greatest southpaw of all time. As for Evander Holyfield, it is absolutely ridiculous to call him overrated. He has beaten more world champions that anyone in boxing’s history from any weight division. More than Ali, Louis, Robinson, Pep etc. I’m not saying he is better than them though. Holyfield was the undisputed world cruiser weight champion as well as 4 time heavyweight champ. He has won the heavyweight title more than any heavyweight in history. He also has beaten the likes of Holmes, Foreman, Bowe, Qawi, DeLeon, Tyson and Mercer.

For my list, I just want to say… just because someone is overrated DOES NOT mean they aren’t good/great.

    1. Oscar De La Hoya
    2. Manny Pacquiao
    3. Joe Calzaghe
    4. Arturo Gatti
    5. Ricky Hatton

    1 Oscar de la Hoya

    4 Antonio Margarito
    5 Joe Calzaghe

Margarito – used his chin to wear out opponents and his "hands of stone"
Oscar De La Hoya – credit for taking the toughest fights, but if he looked like Antonio Margarito, he wouldn’t get half the hype he did.
Ricky Hatton – good boxer, but not great.
Joe Calzaghe – His only real "toss em up" was against Mikkel Kessler, his bouts with RJJ and B-Hop came 3-5 years too late.
Pacquiao – He’s great. Surely top 50 ATG, but he’s not the second coming of Jesus that a lot of fans seem to believe.
Mayweather – his resume and performances at the lighter weights were amazing. His resume at welter leaves a lot to be desired, he needs to "continuously" prove he’s the best. Not take on the best at the lower weights then take the foot off the gas pedal and proclaim yourself to be the best.

Good question sir. First of all before reading my list, realize that I have the up most respect for anyone who steps in to that squared circle and dons the gloves regardless of who they are. And these are only my opinions and nothing else as some will agree while others disagree but I will try to explain my reasoning. Here is my list, thank you:

    In no particular order:

Ricky Hatton. This guy to his credit does come to fight and had built up a pretty impressive resume. But in his big fights particularly with Mayweather Jr. and Pacquiao, he failed miserably.

Oscar De La Hoya. Some could make a case for him even being underrated as he has held several different titles and fought the very best, never avoiding anyone. But in the biggest fights he like Hatton didn’t come through.

Mike Tyson. Earlier in his career Tyson was a monster knocking everybody out and seemed unbeatable. His problem was his head more than his body and when the going got rough and while at a still early stage in his career, lost all his big fights to Douglas, Holyfield, and Lewis.

James Toney. A marvelous fighter and very talented but doesn’t seem to care much about training and taking many of his fights seriously, so he wound up on the losing side of some fights he could have won if his heart was in it.

Terry Norris. This man had great skill but a very weak chin. Beat some prominent fighters like Leonard and Mugabi but they were shot fighters when he fought them.

    1. David Haye- This guy has great skills but has no chin to take a punch from anybody. People in England hype this man as if he was the next Lennox Lewis. IF he beats at least one of the Klitschko brothers than I won’t be so hard on this man…

    2. Hector Camacho Jr.- During the late 90s and early part of the 21st century he was said to become twice the fighter his daddy was. Some people should just stay away from boxing and Hector should follow in the footsteps of Prince Naseem Hamed and disappear.

    3. Joe Calzaghe- Beat a nobody in Jeff Lacy. Beat B-Hop and Roy 5 years too late and was drop by both of these 40 year olds. Was afraid to fly and finally when he losses that fear he decides to finally come to America to fight to OLD men. Must be nice to be an retired undefeated fighter.

    4. Naseem Hamed- Was considered P4P by some during the late 90s. Than came along a smaller fighter by the name of Marco Antonio Barrera, who made Naseem look like an amature that night.

    5. Ricky Hatton- Another Briton that gets hyped in England. Tons of credit for beating Kostya. However, Ricky has never backed down from anyone and with that he gets my respect.

Trinidad- One dimensional, no wins against an elite fighter

De La Hoya- He only has one victory against a fighter who was in his prime and that was Quartey

Vitali Klitchko- Reigning dominance because Lennox Lewis is retired and the Heavyweight competition is dead

    Wlad Klitchko- See above

Hopkins- His best wins have come against smaller fighters moving up in weight with the exception of Tarver

Oh dear oh dear oh dear. Are you joking? If you are not then you clearly don’t know much about boxing.

Overated, so many boxers within the last 25 years – so in recent years then -

    1 Paulie Malignaggi
    2 Arturo Gatti
    3 Kelly Pavlik
    4 Samuel Peter
    5 Antonio Tarver

How anyone can think that Hagler is overated is beyond me.

Holyfield beat a lot of top boxers. I don’t know how long you’ve been following the sport for – but I can’t fathom your logic. Oscar de la Hoya lost ALL his big fights? – mate WTF you on about?
