how hard is mma to "get used to"?
March 18th, 2010 | by admin |right i currently do boxing and was just wondering, how long do you think it would take someone if they was cut out for it to "get used to" the knees, elbows, etc.
im looking into starting and would like to spar so jw, mainly doing it for extra fitness for boxing dont know weather i want to stick at it yet… depends how i like it.
i was thinking of doing dirty boxing as the class is called with a few mates.
jdanders i think its probably full mma with takedowns etc. hope that helps everyone else as well…
If your looking to just do dirty boxing it shouldn’t take long. But if your talking full blown MMA sparring with take downs now you may be talking about a whole different time frame. Unless you have some sort of wrestling/judo/BJJ background, the take downs and ground game will probably confuse you for a good while.
However if your doing it for fitness, I’d say go for it, as it will do nothing but help your cardio.
Edit: If it is full takedowns, then yeah it’ll be hard to get used to at first, and the ground game can confuse some people. But the more mat time you get the more you start to piece things together. Everyone is different, you may be a natural and not even know it, but then again you could be completely lost. But expanding your game can be fun and your cardio and lung strength will improve greatly (the first time you get in a good side control or mounted you’ll understand) and if you still box you’ll see a big difference in your stamina and how fast you get fatigued. So again, nothing but good will come of it. Just watch out for elbows if you have a fight looming.

It depends. Varies from fighter to fighter. Each person learns new skills at different rates. For you, it would depend on how quickly you are able to adapt, and the only way to know is to go out and try it.
