Opinion on exercise plan ?
May 7th, 2010 | by admin |Hello!
I’m 23 180 lbs. 5′8 and my goal is 155-160 lbs.
I have been loosing weight very slowly for the past few years. Last July I was only 10 pounds away from my goal when i discovered I had asthma. I started gaining weight due to cortisones, depression and the fact that I had to quit smoking after 10 years. I gained a total of 17 lbs. in less than two months and only lost 7.
Since then I live a healthier life, I moved to NYC and walk everywhere, I kicked the habit for good, cut back on drinking and eat a calorie controlled diet. However I don’t loose any weight. I examined my life and realized that I was doing a few things wrong….not eating enough fiber, veggies or fruit, eating sugary treats (staying in my calorie range) but I can fix all that easily.
I decided to start taking advantage of my school’s gym, pool and group classes. The problem is that I can only go from M-Th and probably two Saturdays a month; which means that I might have to excersice on consecutive days. My idea is to to a cardio class once or twice a week (kick boxing, fitness express, dancing etc), to swim one day and do bicycle, elliptical or something of that nature once a week. In addition to that squads, free weights, abs.
Is it safe to exercise consecutive days if I switch it around?
Do you think it will be an effective way to get in shape? I really just want to be healthy and don’t care how long it takes for me to hit my weight goal (now 20 lbs away) as long as I’m in the right track!
Another thing is that my schedule changes in March so I could only go to the gym once or twice a week if I’m lucky but the weather will be nice enough for me to walk or ride the bike outside. I might try the couch to 5k program when the time comes. the thing is for me to get phisical activity. Do you think I could gain weight if I change my routine?
Sorry, I know is wordy, confusing and too long, but I really want to get a few opinions, tips, ideas…anything will be greatly appreciated.
I lost 20 pounds in 10 months by running. I hate running – I am extremely slow, and it feels like a chore, but it drops weight like nothing else. It took me several months of walking, then walking faster, and then mixing walking/running, but it really works.
You can work out every day if you work out opposite muscle groups. I work out five days a week which means inevitably I work out a couple days in a row. Nothing wrong with that provided you are careful.
You also have to be really disciplined about diet. It honestly comes down to asking yourself, which makes you happier – being healthy, or eating whatever you want? Think long and hard and come up with your answer. If you do not have the discipline to change your eating habits, you are in for a lifetime of yo-yo weight.
Good luck!

It sounds like a decent plan, though I wouldn’t overdo it. Simply walking a lot is a great exercise. The swimming thing is perfect. It is THE best exercise. Next to that, bicycling is the best exercise. Fun too =) Cardio will definitely burn fat and slim you down. 20 lbs isn’t a lot to lose. You’ll be able to do it. Between the swimming and the cardio and the good diet.
Like I said, you should try really hard not to do it. Everything in moderation =) I’d only do the weight training a few days a week. Your muscles need rest. Cardio you can do as much as you want, along with ab stuff.
Hope this helped.
