Well, see, I’ve finally compiled what I want to send to my friend in London, and, although I’ve read up on restrictions and instructions on how to send, I am still confused.

First, do I actually need to use a customs form if I have these items in the box? I believe that a customs form is required no matter what you have inside?

- tiny glass jar of origami stars (about two and a half inches in height and one inch in diameter)
- one sketch
- one handmade book of "American terms"
- one 5.25 oz bag of Ghirardelli chocolate
- one letter (sealed in an envelope)

I plan on sending a small packet package with First Class International; the box doesn’t weigh over two pounds.

I read that you don’t need get custom charges if, as quoted from the USPS site, "Gift packages of small value provided they do not contain any tobacco goods, spirits or wine; Gift packages containing only well-worn clothing (excluding garments of high value), limited quantities of foodstuffs (other than caviar), soap or consumable medical supplies." (http://pe.usps.gov/text/imm/fh_014.htm) Does "gift" only apply to commercially sent items (such as if you purchase from a website)?

What do I mark dutiable items as on the customs form 2976? They ask whether or not the contents are gifts, documents, etc.

Also, I’m not entirely sure how to input her address onto the form. Her address doesn’t have a building number (she gave me an address to send to her university), so I’m not sure how to put her address because we have the Address 1/2 structure. This is her address (which is quite generic, so it shouldn’t be too much trouble):

Lady Chapman, Residence Office
Kidderpore Avenue
London, NW3 7ST
UK

OR

Kings College London
Hampstead Campus
Kidderpore Avenye
London, NW3 7ST
UK

What part would go in Address 1, and what part in Address 2? Or would they both go into Address 1?

(Additionally, I’m assuming I would have to get customs forms for small boxes that only contain letters and one tiny glass jar with origami stars in it?)

Thank you so much to anyone who can help me and my lost self!

I recently bought a car with a semi-auto, or ACS (auto clutch system), transmission. Although I hold a full UK manual licence (so have manual & auto entitlement), this has sparked some debate between me and my friends as to whether a car like this can be legally driven on a UK auto (class:b auto) category driving licence.

I started with a Google search. And it seems that this question is shrouded with confusion. So I looked on DVLA, direct.gov and the Driving Standards Agency web sites and still drew a blank.

I find this bemusing as more and more cars are being produced with this kind of gear box option. Often called tiptronic, something-else-tronic, flappy paddles etc.

A lot of forums revealed confusion over what a semi-automatic or ACS is. Many contributors often referring to it being an automatic with a D (drive setting) and some selection control. Like the 1,2,3 settings on some Mercs I’ve had that allow the selection of 1st, 2nd or 3rd to help when traction is a problem like in snow or mud.
This isn’t a semi-auto at all. Semi-auto has no Drive setting. It always requires manual selections of the correct gear for the conditions, although using different gear selection techniques and removing the manual depressing of a clutch pedal. It still has a clutch but this is operated automatically by the car’s systems.

As an ex-driving instructor, from when semi-autos were just a new option on cars like Ferraris, I regard this as a manual transmission. Clutch operation is only 20-30% of the extra skills applied when driving a manual car when compared to an automatic.

Having had this ACS car for almost a month now, it actually requires new skills I’m now learning as you can’t introduce the road speed to the new selected gear as smoothly as you can in a manual when changing down for junctions and conditions. Hill starts are also still to master. As is maneuvering in tight spaces.

However, also from the point of view of an ex-driving instructor, it wouldn’t surprise me if these were officially legal to be driven on an auto licence. Given the strange ways the DVLA applies law and policy.

Does anyone have a link to any official line on this question?

If you found this question because you need to know the answer to this question because you are an auto licence holder considering buying a semi-auto, my advice is you get it in writing from the DVLA or DSA and triple check it with your insurance company.
I wouldn’t take any chances as you could possibly find yourself illegal and uninsured (therefore illegal again) in the event of an incident.

Please don’t just take bloke-down-the-pub’s word for it, or even your driving instructors. (I know, instructors are often just as confused on these finer points).

Stay safe, and legal
Lol thanks for pointing out my mistake. It was, of course, meant to say on an "automatic" licence.

But thanks also for your very informative link. Just what I was after.

Which states:

"SEMI-AUTOMATIC SYSTEMS

With these the driver has to select the gear required by movement of the gear lever as with a manually controlled gearbox, but there is no clutch pedal. For driving test and licencing purposes these vehicles are regarded as automatics"

Awesome. In true DVLA fashion they’ve totally de-valued most of the skill difference in the manual/auto relationship. This doesn’t surprise me one bit.

After all these are the people who were proposing a tax system utilising GPS in every vehicle to track all the miles traveled when we have a fuel tax system that does this fully automatically and takes into consideration gass-guzzlers and poorly maintained un-green cars.

I’d hate to work in that office as opening a bag of crisps probably involves an amount of high explosive or some dangerous co

"Can you drive a semi-automatic on a manual UK licence ?" yes, manual covers all use.

Can you drive a semi-automatic on an Automatic UK licence? See pages 10 & 11 of the Practical Test information, they are classed as automatics.

Its a phone in a box, all i want to do is send it first class standard international. how much rougly is this gonna be

Unless this is a family member, DO NOT send it

If you got paid through Paypal, make sure the money is IN your account before you send – don’t trust an email as scammers will send you an email saying you have to send the tracking number before the money is credited. That’s a scam and not from Paypal – it’s a fake email. And if you did get paid by Paypal and the money is in your account when you log in to Paypal.com you CANNOT ship to Nigeria. Paypal does not allow accounts in Nigeria and you can only ship to the verified mailing address. If you ship anywhere else the buyer will file a chargeback and Paypal will refund the money. Unless you have proof the item was signed for and delivered to the VERIFIED Paypal address(which can’t be in NIgeria) Paypal will always refund the buyer even if you have proof it was delivered to Nigeria

If you got paid by cheque or money order, it’s fake and your bank won’t discover it for 2-3 weeks, long after your phone is gone

NEVER send anything to Nigeria unless it’s a family member or you are going to get scammed

My partners son has been ill all week and its now Friday which is the start day for my partner to have him for the weekend. His mum made a fuss that we couldn’t pick him up till tomorrow but then she went out to boxing class leaving him alone so we went to get him. She’s now been locked out and has made every excuse to get her son back home so she cam get back in the house. She has suddenly said he has a doctors appointment that she didn’t tell is about earlier…. She now says the doctors is because the school need a certificate to see he has been ill. He is 12 and not doing any exams or anything. He’s in his first year. Does this is also the first time he has been off school, before this week he had 100% attendance. Does he really need a certificate or is she lying. If he does then we will take him to get one

Technically in the world of work you would self certificate for the first week. A doctor cannot give a certificate if a person has not been seen recently by that doctor for that problem.
I doubt a school would actually require a doctor’s note. If the child had perfect attendance then it’s parent’s word would be enough. When I was at school a doctor’s note wasn’t required even when I was in hospital for several days, missing around 2 weeks of school in total.
Can you not send someone off with the sons key so she can get back in. If you leave her locked out she will be more unhelpful in the future.
Can you partner not take him the the doctor’s appointment or yourself? A father or step-parent is perfectly capable of taking a child to the doctors.

Both you and your partner should try and be as reasonable as possible to the mum. You don’t want the lad hearing all this.

I need some ace arguments or debate points for an upcoming discussion about getting a horse for my 14th birthday. Let me tell you the background information: I am 14 in february. I am going to ask to start planning for the horse in late january or early feb when the parents ask what i would like for my birthday, for the horse to be bought in late march to mid april. I have been riding two/three years officially, but I had my first few rides when I was 9. I am currently sharing a horse four days a week. During those four days I do everything for the horse- bring her in, muck out, fill haynets, groom her, change her rugs, do waterbuckets and her feet, etc. Because its winter, unmistakably, noting the Big Freeze in the UK, which is where I live, it of course means a lot more work, horse-wise. It also means that in the past 6 weeks, which is the time I’ve been sharing the horse, I’ve only ridden her three or four times, because it gets dark quickly and its been so icy. My dads main point against is that he wants to know I’m commited to horses. To be honest, i go up all the time in -8 degrees c, work for hours and hardly ever ride, i even did xmas eve, xmas day and boxing day without complaints, and i’m still prepared to carry on is proof that I’m commited I think. I have saved up some money for christmas that I can contribute towards costs, although my dad has mentioned that money isnt the problem, but he wants to be certain I’m ready. I know I will be starting my GCSES soon but as there is a new law that all coursework has to be done at school, i am pretty sure it means less after school work but a lot more classwork. Even if there is a lot of work, my school finishes at 3:30, I’m changed and up at the yard by 3:45 and usually home by about 4:40 if im quick. I dont go to bed until about half ten, so theres plenty of time for horse and work.
Just to be clear, I do love my share horse, but I think she is too big for me to handle (she crushed my foot yesterday and I had to go to hospital, and she was much bigger than I’d hope to have when I was looking for a share horse, but there wasnt many share options in my area), and also the fact that I feel quite limited with her. I cant go to shows, I cant jump on her even though jumping is my favourite, because she had an injury, and shes 18, which i know is still young-ish but I’d have to enter veteran classes at shows and shes not as speedy as I would have liked. Despite this she is incredibly kind and patient (the foot thing was an accident) and has the perfect temperament for a first horse. Also im a bit of a worrier, I worry when its not my day to do her because the other girl who shares her puts the water buckets right near where she poos, so I’ve found several rather nasty buckets of water, I found string in her bedding and rugs dumped on her stable floor, in the poo, which I’ve had to handle and clean.
Those are my current arguments. Can you think of any other points for or against that me or my dad might come up with? What do you think of my situation? And when I say arguments, I mean a calm, non shouting discussion that we happen to be on different sides of. I havent raised any of these points with my dad yet by the way.
Thanks, and sorry its so long!
By the way, we dont go to college (Uni) till at the earliest 18, but I was planning a gap year so it would be 19. I did mention money, and my dad has said that money isnt a major problem. My mum grew up aroud horses and she knows how much it costs. I know that i could stay with a share horse, but I’d much prefer my own, for reasons I listed above, and my friends have horses and they go up every day and I feel left out sometimes because the go on rides and have fun without me.
He hasnt made up his mind, cos I havent asked him yet, so y’know…

Hi there , point out to your dad how responsible you’ve been by sharing a horse which meant you caring for it as well as the enjoyment side[riding] also you have been having riding lessons with a profrsiProfessional teacher, and maybe he/she would give you a written letter to your dad saying what your ridiing standaStandardalso because your mum was brought up with horses you’l have her to help at times when you need it, i know you said you want a horse in feb/march but this is not the ideal time to get one ;summer time is the best for buying a horse , this is what my tutor says, i am currently studying horsecare at college, just passed my first exam thank goodness! anyway in summer you and your parents could have some great days out looking for a horse for you best wishes to you hope you get your dream,

I have been training at a boxing gym for about 10 months now and have dropped 7 stone (23st down to 16st) in that time as well as picking up confidence and skills. I am looking to compete but i am 31 and also looking towards what else i can do.

SO i have seen there is an MMA gym near the boxing gym. I was thinking of going twice a week, in addition to the 3 sessions a week i currently do at boxing.

Can anyone tell what to expect when i go along? I was undecided between MMA classes or May Thai.

Cheers.

~(i should add i live in Kent i the UK!)

Go for it! It’s a good idea that your already doing boxing so the cardio side of MMA won’t be tough (boxing cardio is tougher than MMA). Go for it, what have you got to loose. I do Boxing for an hour then straight into an MMA class in the same gym and it helps a lot because its still your jab that win’s you the fight.

To save me a trip to the post office to get the dvd weighed does anyone know how much postage stamps I’d need to send a boxed dvd to an address in the uk from an address in the uk.

Thanks

You really do need to take it to the post office, because they don’t just do it on weight now, they also do it on dimensions.

You say a DVD, but some DVD’s have more than one disk in the box (I take it this is a single normal DVD film over a large boxset?)

So weight will vary, plus are you putting it in a jiffy bag or bubble wrap and then brown paper? Are you sending it in another box?? This will affect weight and dimensions of package.

You can check prices and weights on the Royal Mail Website, but if you don’t want to other person to have to pay extra postage costs, I suggest you go to the Post Office!!

There is no service called Royal Mail 1st Class Next day delivery – 1st class is usually delivered within 1 – 3 business days (93% next working day) but its not a guaranteed service.

You may be thinking of Special Delivery which is guaranteed and that would cost £6.70 to £9.25 based on the assumption that your parcel weighs under 1Kg and the amount of cover you want £500 – £2000)

If you wanted a Saturday delivery that would cost £8.95 to £11.50.

These figures are from memory so check for current up to date ones.
