One of my friends, does Karate(is a brown belt) and I tried it with him for a couple days as a trial. It seemed way too relaxed for me, I understand that’s because it was in the beggining but I watched his class and it didn’t seem useful.

On the other hand, me and my other friend want to try a local Boxing gym, and would go and learn how to box together.

Please don’t say Karate or Boxing just because you only take 1 of them, and remember for self defense and fitness! Thanks!

p.s I’ve just started working out, and plan on doing my choice for awhile probably until I’m 18, I plan on joining the USMC

Self defense is a rather ambiguous term. It can range from a drunken brawl to a real life or death situation. Boxing is a sport and won’t cater to life threatening moments and teach what to do. It will teach how to fight, however, and would be useful on the lesser sides of self defense.

Karate, on the outside, might look useless to someone not use to it’s methods. It’s definitely not. That doesn’t mean the school you witnessed was or wasn’t a legitimate school. There seems to be more bad schools than good nowadays.
Karate, in it’s authentic and legitimate form, is taught for life or death self defense and is useful. Don’t confuse kata (forms) with prearranged shadowboxing or choreographed fights. It’s much, much deeper than that and neither of those.

As for fitness: a legitimate Karate school shouldn’t focus on fitness, only technique. You do get a workout, but it’s definitely not suppose to be some kind of cardiovascular/calisthenics class. If it is, then chances the style being taught is a watered down version.

Hello,
I am an incoming junior and I would like to know how to boost my college profile if my dream school is Duke University. I want to double major in Biomedical engineering and History. I know that is almost impossible to do in 4 years, but I am willing to take summer courses.

Class Average: 94.1
Class Rank: 17 of 195 (This has been a real issue with my parents; I’m trying to land in the top 10)

Classes:
I have all A’s in all of my honors/advanced classes except AP World History and AP Chemistry; I’m awaiting scores for both APs.

ExtraCurriculars:
Mock Trial, Treasurer of my school’s Hispanic Honor Society, Most Active member of Key Club, Incoming National Honor Society member, Treasurer of FBLA, By the end of June, I will have completed 96 hours of volunteering at my local Hospital, and plenty others more.

Extra:
I’m Nigerian. I have traveled to the Netherlands and the UK. I had the highest math, reading, and science CRCT scores in my 8th grade class. My first practice PSAT that I took sophomore year had a score of 172. I will graduate high school at the age of 16.

Fitness:
I do yoga, take boxing classes, and I ballroom dance.

Could you please explain your high school and why you will graduate at the age of 16? Are you young for your class, or did you skip grades? Or does your school allow sophomores to graduate?

Aside from that, being a Nigerian will help out in your Duke application. Also, I would recommend taking the SAT or ACT next year or early in senior year. A PSAT score of 172 translates to about a 1720 SAT, which is, honestly, far too low for admission to most top-tier colleges. If possible, you’ll need an SAT score of over 2000 to get a decent chance.

As for yoga, boxing, and ballroom dance: if possible, continue doing those activities through senior year. Colleges like to see commitment, especially for non-traditional sports such as boxing.

If possible, raise your class rank, but don’t treat it like a deal-breaker for college. In fact, colleges do not look at the actual rank but rather at the percentile. This allows comparisons across schools with differing class sizes (from tiny high schools with only 20 seniors to those with over 1000). Thus, colleges will see you as ranked at the top 9% of your class.

20 7lb weighted jabs
20 7lb weighted uppercuts
20 7 lb weighted hooks
10 standing tricep extensions

thats to be repeated 3 times, with 2 minute breaks

10 press ups
10 sit ups
thats to be repeated 3 times

this is to be done 4 times a week, the other days i have a 4 mile run
and every single day i cycle to my manual job, which is a mile each way

so what do you guys think?? thanks for reading my long *** post btw

Sounds like a good start. Upper body strength imperative. Can you get one session with a pro to check?

thanks in advance

I would not concern yourself about getting big muscles, especially for women as they have lower levels of testostorone compared to men. it takes years of hard work pumping iron to increase muscle mass. performing cardio will help you lose weight without increasing muscle mass, you will of course look toned but thats a sexy benefit in my opinion

Thanks so much!

Boxing Gyms. Make sure every night you jog for at least 45-60 minutes. Increases your stamina, which you will need.

thanks in advance

no not particularly. its just really good for your fitness. its loads of aerobic exercise which gets you sweating and your blood pumping, which is good. You’ll do tonnes of crunches which will make your tummy really toned aswell Your arms muscle to fat ratio will change, and you will get more muscle instead of fat…but you wont look like a bodybuilder

good luck, its tiring haha.
